Gentle jogging more beneficial than intense excercise

Abstract

This study shows that a modest amount of less intense exercise may be more beneficial than more intense prolonged exercise


1 to 2.5 hours of light jogging per week shown to reduce mortality more than moderate levels of exercise

 

It is well known that exercise has great health benefits and a recent study provides good news for those of us who prefer a leisurely jog around the park to a marathon.

The study suggests that 1-2.4 hours a week of jogging at a slow to average pace has greater health benefits than more intense, strenuous levels of exercise.

 In this observational study, the group that exercised for 1-2.4 hours in total, with a frequency of 2-3 times per week experienced the biggest reduction in mortality rates. Those who exercised strenuously had the same risk of mortality as those who were sedentary, proving once again that the benefits of exercise follow a U shaped curve (ie that maximal benefit is gained when exercising at a low to moderate intensity, 2-3 times a week)

There really is no excuse not to  leave the office earlier and exercise now!
